1. Someone asked me about my motivation to run yesterday. The biggest
motivator is my children. I am an older mom and don't want to be on the
sidelines. Don't want to sit and watch my kids skate, when I can be with
them, skating right along beside them–if that's possible. It won't be
forever–but I want to be an active, hands-on mom, while I can.
2. So I try to take care of myself–for them. I think a lot of mom's
think of exercise as selfish–but it's not. It's the best thing you can
do for your family.
3. I don't have a lot of extra money or time. So I can't join a gym,
take Yoga classes, or dance classes. So, I run. It works out well–I put
my kids on the bus and go.
4. If I can't run, I walk. That space in time where it's just me outside
is grounding. And sacred.
5. Being a mom is, of course, the most important thing in my life. One
of biggest challenges has been to not allow myself to emerge into my children completely. That mother-love is a powerful thing–and I would willingly
lie down and die for my children. But in the mean time, I am still me
and need to tend to myself, along with them. So, I run.

I love everything you said here – especially the bit about exercise not being a selfish use of time. It is a truly selfless act – it makes you healthy happy and more available to your family. I will have to link back to it when I get the Womens 4 Miler blog up and running.
