Never thought I'd be writing mysteries. Looking back, when I first
started to love reading as a child, it was mysteries. I loved Trixie
Beldon. You know, I also never thought I'd be writing cookbooks. But
life is like that. You take the opportunities you are offered. Or not.
Here's the thing: I could still be sitting on the biography of Mrs. Rowe
and saying "I am not going to budge on this. It's a biography, not a
cookbook." But then, personally, I'd never have learned about food
writing or recipe writing and OH my life and my writing is so much
richer because of the choice I made. Also, the important thing is so
many more people know Mrs. Rowe's story–even in the abbreviated form.

So Maggie Rae's Scrapbooks is a story I've been thinking about for a
long time. On the one level, it's a "craft" mystery because the women
who solve the mysteries get together to scrapbook. On another level,
it's about the power of women's friendships and community. I was
inspired many years ago when I used to get together to scrapbook with a
variety of women. Some may think of it is a "cute" hobby–it can be
that. But look deeper. I think such a popular hobby deserves a deeper
look.
